Retrofit: 20Kw system for detatched farmhouse, Ellishill

A DERBYSHIRE farmer is going green to save thousands of pounds each year on his energy bills.

STIEBEL ELTRON ground source heat pumps Ellishill

Ian Potter from Ellishill in Ashbourne has had a WPF20 Set Stiebel Eltron ground source heat pump installed, which will take energy from a man made pond to provide heating via an underfloor system and domestic hot water.

Stoke-based renewable energy specialist Total NRG installed the retrofit system, using a ground loop on the farm’s land to provide energy to Mr Potter’s detached farmhouse.

Total NRG worked closely with Stiebel Eltron – one of the world’s leading heat pump manufacturers – to design the system, which is housed in one of the farm’s plant rooms.

Bryan Jones from Total NRG first visited Mr Potter’s farm in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, in June 2011.

He said: "The farm had been running on oil for decades but the land owner, Ian Potter, wanted to integrate renewable technology to make it green and lower his fuel and utility bills.

"This is our second Stiebel Eltron installation, and we worked with their technical team to design a 20kw ground source heat pump set system, with a 700litre buffer and a 500 litre hot water cylinder.

"We installed the equipment in a separate plant room, 35m away from the main house, taking heat from the farm’s man made pond, via collector loops, to the ground source heat pump. A pre-installed pipe now takes heating and hot water from the plant room to the main house, to feed the under floor heating and hot water outlets.

"The heat pump produces high grade energy in the plant room sent through district heating pipes. We also added a communications unit to control the heat pumps and detect any possible faults through a telephone link – this means any problems will come straight to us and we will know exactly what needs fixing.”

Mr Jones said Stiebel Eltron provides bespoke solutions to suit each property – helping installers to use the right products and ensuring maximum energy efficiency.

"After our last Stiebel Eltron installation we recognised the quality and expert engineering that their products offer to both domestic and commercial properties. The fact that Stiebel Eltron work closely with us to find the right solution and offer support throughout the installation process is a real benefit to our business.”

Chris Johnson, Stiebel Eltron Midlands Specification Manager, said: “A growing number of land owners are looking to meet green standards and for customers such as Mr Potter with a significant area of land, ground source heat pumps are a great solution.
"Properties running on oil or LPG gas are also very vulnerable to rising fuel prices so heat pumps are an excellent sustainable option.

"Stiebel Eltron can offer a 20kw heat pump system on a single phase supply and the product is MCS approved – not many anufacturers provide this option.

"In the long term heat pump systems will save energy and reduce the large energy costs that are inevitable with running a large outdoor area such as a farm.

"Many farms we work with are large rambling buildings that are now getting good space heating all the time. What some farmers have also looked at is doing up, for an example, an old barn as accommodation to either sell or rent as a holiday home."
