Farm uses lake for heat energy, Petworth

Installation of WPF29Set Ground Source Heat Pump

Green energy specialist Stiebel Eltron has completed the eco-renovation of a five-bedroom country house, using heat energy from a trout farm lake.

The leading UK renewable energy products manufacturer worked with installer Planet Energy Solutions on the property at Duncton Mill Farm in Petworth, West Sussex.

The farm’s trout fishing lake – a popular venue for local anglers – has been used as the source of energy for a Stiebel Eltron WPF29set (1 x 16kW and 1 x 13kW) Ground Source Heat Pump.

The homeowners at the spacious five bedroom property decided to install a heat pump to replace their existing oil fire boiler system. Replacing the old system will save them thousands of pounds on energy bills, with domestic hot water and underfloor heating now provided directly via the heat pump.

Alan Brooks of West Sussex based Planet Energy Solutions said: “As soon as we started discussing green energy with the property owners, we saw an opportunity to use the lake and realised after researching the options that it was a perfect solution.

“This is the first installation that Planet Energy has done using a lake, but it was quite a straight forward project. The system is now providing domestic hot water and space heating – we also fitted the underfloor heating for the property.

“The homeowners have told us that they are delighted with the results; they wanted something that would offer good cost savings but also have excellent green credentials – with this system they have got both. They actually own the Barlavington Estate and are speaking with us about renewable energy installations in a range of other properties.

“The heat pump system in total cost £30,000, but we have estimated that it will have paid for itself in eight to ten years.”

Alan said he chose to work with Stiebel Eltron UK due to both the quality of the products and the excellent customer service provided by the Stiebel team.

“I have done a few jobs with Stiebel Eltron and have always been impressed – the heat pumps are top quality and very efficient, while the staff provide a hands on and knowledgeable service.

“Having worked with a number of the other leading brands, Ican honestly say that their service levels pale in comparison to Stiebel Eltron’s. We were also invited to the Green Energy Training Centre at Stiebel Eltron’s headquarters in Merseyside and have to say that the facilities and training sessions were first class.”

Neil Jimpson, Stiebel Eltron’s South East Specification Manager,
said: “This is a fantastic project and we are very pleased with the design of the system. The property owners are already making good use of the fishing lakes to generate money, now they are using them to save money as well.

“Ground source heat pumps are a great energy saving solution for properties with large spaces of land or an existing water feature; we have helped to design and install a number of systems using lakes to heat a property and all our customers have been delighted with the results.

“For this particular home, replacing an oil central heating system will provide substantial savings on fuel bills, one of the main reasons for the owners looking to renewable energy technology.”
